To handle football fans border guards learn English

Ukraine is getting ready for Euro 2012, and its border guards are happily back in class. On April 2011 a very special English course started in the port city of Odessa: 150 hours of intensive study were offered to border inspectors with little or no knowledge of English. Such sessions will be held in different Ukrainian cities until May 2012.

The reason?

Ukraine will host the European football championship in 2012, and hundreds of thousands of foreigners are expected to visit the country. The initiative is organized by the National Academy of the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine and facilitated by the European Union Border Assistance Mission to Moldova and Ukraine (EUBAM), and it is considered an essential part of Ukraine’s preparations for Euro 2012.

This is part of a series of features on projects funded by the EU’s Regional Programme, prepared by journalists and photographers on the ground or the ENPI Info Centre, available in English, Russian, and Ukrainian.
