22-07-2010
A total of 88 doctors and 107 nurseswill shortly join the ranks of Georgia’s family doctors after retraining under a €5 million EU-funded project “Health Care Reform Support Project”. A press release from the EU Delegation in Georgia said doctors and nurses form Samegrelo, Kvemo Kartli and Kakheti regions were due to receive certificates for completing training courses in family medicine at the graduation ceremony on July 20.
The Project seeks to support the country in primary care workforce development, the press release said, adding: “Special focus is made on retraining of primary healthcare professionals to achieve more effective, efficient and financially sustainable primary health care (PHC) system based on the principles of family medicine.”
More than 450 doctors and nurses have so far benefited from the training course (260 in 2008-2009 and 195 in 2009-2010). Currently, the project is funding the third round of training for 139 Russian speakers of Azeri nationality (59 doctors and 80 nurses) working in Kvemo Kartli region.
The project is implemented jointly with Georgia’s Ministry of Labour, Health and Social Affairs as well as with other relevant bodies involved in PHC reform, and will last until the end of 2011. (ENPI Info Centre)
