A four-year EU-funded regional waste management project is launching its activities in Ukraine next Monday, 6 September, aiming to assist in efforts to reduce the risks from inappropriate waste management causing environmental pollution.
The €5.9 million Waste Governance – ENPI East project aims to assist partner countries within the eastern countries of the European Neighbourhood and Partnership Instrument (ENPI East). In Ukraine, the pilot region beneficiary is Zakarpattya, in the west of the country.
The specific objective is to improve the management of waste by promoting higher standards at waste facilities, more effective waste prevention initiatives, increased capacities for waste collection and sorting, as well as increasing reuse, recovery, and safe disposal of waste in the region
A press release from the EU Delegation in Kiev said the project activities within Zakarpattya Oblast would include producing a complete inventory of existing illegal and non-compliant waste disposal sites within the Oblast and developing an integrated waste management strategy for Zakarpattya for the next 15 years.
According to preliminary assessments, the activities in the pilot area in Ukraine will be focused mainly on communal waste, including management of PET bottles, which have proven to be a problem for this mountainous region.
The formal project launch will take place on 6 September and will be attended by representatives of Zakarpattya Oblast and the Delegation of the European Union. Members of the media are invited for registration.
