New South Caucasus Special Representative set to visit Armenia
02-09-2011
The new European Union Special Representative (EUSR) for the South Caucasus and the crisis in Georgia, Ambassador Philippe Lefort, will be visiting Armenia on 7 September, as part of his first visit to the region, according to a press release from the EU Delegation to Armenia.
During his stay in Yerevan, Ambassador Lefort is expected to meet the country’s top officials, including the President, Foreign Minister, Defence Minister, the Secretary of the National Security Council, and others.
Last week, EU High Representative Catherine Ashton welcomed the appointment of Philippe Lefort as European Special Representative, expressing confidence he would “enhance the EU's role in this sensitive region”.
Philippe Lefort is a French diplomat of more than 20 years' experience. He has devoted large parts of his career to the Caucasus and Russia.
His duties as EUSR for the South Caucasus include:
- developing contacts with governments, parliaments, other key political actors, the judiciary and civil society in the region;
- encouraging the countries in the region to cooperate on regional themes of common interest, such as common security threats; the fight against terrorism, illicit trafficking and organised crime;
- contributing to the peaceful settlement of conflicts in accordance with the principles of international law and to facilitate the implementation of such settlement in close coordination with the United Nations, the OSCE and its Minsk Group. (ENPI Info Centre)
