Together We Can Make a Difference! – EU volunteer project kicks off in Georgia
03-11-2011
An EU-funded project designed to mobilise, promote and develop the concept of volunteering in Georgia has been launched this week, according to a press release from the EU Delegation in Tbilisi.
“Together We Can Make a Difference!” aims to promote the spirit and action of volunteering in Georgia and increase national awareness about volunteering and its importance in the country, the press release said.
The initiative is built upon the ancient Georgian tradition of nadi, or providing volunteer help and assistance, and emphasises the relevance and value of its practise in modern life.
Specific activities include a series of on-site volunteering clean-up actions (in Khevi, Kartli and Kakheti) and an anti-plastic bag campaign in Tbilisi. In parallel, presentations will be given in schools focusing on awareness-raising of environmental responsibility.
Following two successful volunteering clean-up actions that already took place in Gergeti (with up to 100 volunteers) and in Mtskheta, the next clean-up action is planned for 6 November in the Kakheti region at the Dzveli Shuamta and Ujarma-Jvarpatiosani historical sites.
Volunteers interested in taking part in the action should make arrangements for their own transportation to Kakheti and are kindly requested to be at the entrance to Dzveli Shuamta, near Telavi, by 11am.
“Together We Can Make a Difference!” has been launched by Europe House, funded by the European Union Delegation to Georgia and in partnership with the Caucasus Environmental NGO Network (CENN) and the National Agency for Cultural Heritage Preservation of Georgia.
It is being implemented under the aegis of the European Year of Volunteering in co-operation with European volunteers working in different regions of Georgia. (ENPI Info Centre)
