EU twinning project to boost custom and sanitary control at Georgian borders

A €1.8 million twinning project aiming to strengthen border control in Georgia has been launched, with a kick-off meeting this week, according to a press release from the EU Delegation in Georgia.

The project, ‘Strengthening the National Customs and Sanitary-Phyto-sanitary Border Control system in Georgia’,will contribute to improving the administrative capacity of the Georgia Revenue Service and enhance organisation and procedures in the customs field, targeting two major fields: customs and Sanitary and Phyto-Sanitary (SPS) control.

Activities in this sector will mainly target legislation, control procedures and training of civil servants both on central and regional levels. The purpose of the Sanitary and Phyto-Sanitary control component is to upgrade and improve the veterinary and plant health element of border control in Georgia.

During the action, Danish, Italian and Estonian experts and partners will take part in twinning activities with Georgian officials through study visits, training seminars, workshops and practical work on site in Georgia, with local visits to sea port, airport and land border crossing points.

The first study visit for Georgian officials took place in Denmark earlier this month, and the next visit will be organised in Estonia by the end of November. (ENPI Info Centre)
