EU and Ukraine work together to harmonise Statistics Standards

A €1 million twinning project on statistics was officially launched this week in Ukraine, according to a press release from the EU Delegation in Kyiv. The Project will run over 18 months providing assistance to the State Statistics Service of Ukraine (SSSU) in implementing actions foreseen in the forthcoming EU-Ukraine Association Agreement.

It will work on development of new statistical methodologies and indicators in selected areas of statistics in line with EU statistical standards, helping to develop Ukraine’s macroeconomic statistics, statistics of enterprises, capital investments and business statistics.

Project activities aim to improve:
  • the statistical capacity of the SSSU through development of new and improvement of existing methodologies and indicators in the selected areas of statistics under EU standards;
  • users’ confidence in statistics through a better dissemination policy and marketing of statistical data;
  • human resources management of the SSSU and work on decreasing the administrative response burden.
The main goal of the project is compliance of activities of the SSSU with the European Statistical Practice Code, which set up the standards of production and dissemination of independent and reliable statistical information of high quality.

At the project opening press-conference, Vadym Pishcheiko, First Deputy Chair of the State Statistics Service of Ukraine, stated: "Ukraine is interested in further development of national statistics to ensure quality of statistical data at the level recommended for statistics services of the countries – candidates for EU membership.

“The fruitful and comprehensive cooperation with the European Union, which provides us with important support to improve the Ukrainian statistics, efficiency of its operations and quality of statistical information, plays the key role in this process." (ENPI Info Centre)
