Georgia signs migration cooperation deal with EU

01-12-2009

Georgia has signed a Partnership for Mobility with the EU, which aims at a broad, structured and intensified cooperation in the area of migration.

An EU Presidency press release said the Partnership involved a large number of cooperation projects to strengthen Georgia’s capacity in the area of migration together with the EU Member States.

A Commission press release said Commissioner for external relations and European Neighbourhood Policy Benita Ferrero-Waldner welcomed the Partnership, saying it would “give concrete expression to the orientations in the field of migration spelled out in the Eastern Partnership; this is a concrete response to the aspirations of Georgian citizens for mobility as well as a further step in the relations between our people.”

The projects involved in the Partnership aim to establish a better framework for the movement of persons and for legal migration, in particular through the reinforcement of Georgia’s capacities for managing migration, through information measures, integration and protection of migrants and also returning persons. They will also seek to counter the negative effect of migration of highly qualified professionals, by facilitating circular migration and the return and reintegration of these people.
