Renowned Georgian wines to be protected by new accord

30-07-2010

Georgia has become the first among the EU Neighbourhood Countries to conclude negotiations on a bilateral agreement with the EU for the protection of "Geographical Indications", with Georgian wines the first to benefit from the system.A Commission press release said this accord would “promote and foster trade in agricultural products and foodstuffs originating in the territories of both Georgia and the EU.”

A geographical indication will act as a ‘quality stamp’ certifying that a product enjoys a certain reputation due to the fact that it has been produced in a well-defined region following specific procedures.

Once it enters into force, the agreement will help reduce misuses and abuses of the names of products, the press release said, adding “It will also better protect consumer rights in terms of not being misled on the true origin of the product, and the respect of traditions.”
The agreement will introduce a mechanism for updates and for regular consultations thus helping to improve the quality of the products traded between the EU and Georgia. It will also help Georgia adapt its domestic legislation “to the highest international standards on the protection of intellectual property rights,” said the press release.

Georgian wine producers will be the first to benefit from the new accord that will grant protection to 18 wine Geographical Indications originating from Georgia, such as Khvanchkara and Kindzmarauli. This might stimulate similar protection in other categories of products, encourage the development of new initiatives for tourism and “contribute to the development of those rural areas that have been producing wine and food following century long traditions,” the press release said.
