A ‘Lesson of Respect’ from Russian and European comic artists: international exhibition opens in Moscow
26-04-2012

RESPECT, an international exhibition of social comics is being launched today, 26 April, at the Centre of Contemporary Art WinZavod in Moscow, according to a press release from the EU Delegation to Russia.
The main objective of this cultural initiative is to facilitate and develop ties between comic art communities (artists, festivals, comic book publishers) in Russia and Europe, as well as to promote the genre of social comics, which will help to engage young people in human rights issues through interesting and understandable dialogue.
The project, which is co-funded by the European Union, is organised by the International Comics Festival KomMissia in partnership with the Goethe-Institute Moscow and Yekaterinburg branch of the National Centre for Contemporary Arts and WinZavod.
As part of the Moscow International Comics Festival KomMissia-2012, the exhibition will feature art works by comic artists from nine different European countries (Belgium, Finland, France, Germany, Russia, Spain, Turkey, Ukraine and the UK) who drew comics especially for the RESPECT project.
The artists will personally present their works at the opening of the exhibition and hold comic arts workshops on 29 April 2012.
The themes used by the artists were sourced from meetings with civil society activists in Moscow and Yekaterinburg. Each artist expressed their own unique view on a problem relevant for all Europeans – living in a multicultural, multinational society.
A social aspect of the project will be conducting interactive lessons with the help of comics of the RESPECT project in Russian educational institutions. These graphic stories will help facilitate dialogues on human rights with young people of different ages and social backgrounds.
