Medieval culture brings together people from seven countries in Belarus
12-06-2012

A Festival of Medieval Culture was organised by an EU cross-border cooperation project in Polotsk, Belarus, earlier this month, as part of the city's 1150th anniversary festivities. The event brought together enthusiasts from medieval re-enactment clubs of Belarus, Russia, Ukraine, Czech Republic, Poland, Lithuania, as well as folk craftsmen from Latvia.
The festival was co-financed by the EU-funded project 'Fostering Capacity for Tourism Development in Latgale-Utena-Vitebsk Cross Border Region' (BELLA DVINA 2), which is being implemented within the Latvia-Lithuania-Belarus Cross-Border Cooperation Programme.
Among the main attractions were tilting matches for archers and knights-in-arms in accordance with the rules of Early and High Middle Ages, an attack of the medieval castle situated in a picturesque historic spot on the Western Dvina, and a medieval feast. The festival also featured music performances and shows by bands and groups from Latvia (Latgale region) and Lithuania (Utena region), workshops on crafts, medieval dances, medieval cuisine, rune reading and traditions.
Guests of the festival had a chance to try medieval food and listen to the unique music of medieval times. Latvian medieval re-enactment clubs came to Polotsk together with craftsmen from the region of Latgale who managed to carefully keep and develop traditions of old-time masters.
The objective of the Latvia-Lithuania-Belarus CBC Programme is to enhance the cohesion of the cross border area through reducing regional disparities and securing economic and social welfare and cultural identity of its inhabitants. (EU Neighbourhood Info)
