Commissioner: Moldova rewarded for headway in reforms

Moldova has achieved undisputable headway as far as political stabilization and reforms are concerned, Enlargement and European Neighbourhood Commissioner Štefan Füle said after his meeting with Moldova’s Prime Minister Vlad Filat yesterday.

In particular, he commended the Moldovan people for the election of President Nicolae Timofti, for the return of the Communist opposition to Parliament, for the adoption of much-needed laws and strategies, as well as for progress on the Transnistria issue, “including the personal investment of Prime Minister Filat and the leader of Transnitria [Yevgeny] Schevtchuk”.

The Commissioner said the EU would continue “to support Moldova's European ambition, for the benefit of its citizens”, adding the EU was matching its 'more for more' principle with concrete deeds. In particular, he announced a decision to grant Moldova an additional €28 million under the Eastern Partnership Integration and Cooperation Programme (EaPIC) to back its reforms, increasing by 30% the EU’s 2012 bilateral grant support to Moldova to a total of €122 million.

Füle and Filat had agreed the priorities needed “to sustain the very active dynamics of EU-Moldova relations” and acknowledged “the good spirit prevailing in Association Agreement negotiations” and in talks on the future deep and comprehensive free trade area.

Both sides agreed on the need for Moldova to ensure the sustainability of reforms, to strengthen the fight against corruption and to improve the business and investment climate, stressing that “strict respect for the rule of law was crucial”.

Stefan Fule also expressed the view that “more could be done to improve dialogue between Moldova's political forces”. (EU Neighbourhood Info)
