Eastern neighbours trained on software tool to calculate air pollutant and greenhouse gas emissions from road transport

Participants at a recent workshop in Belgrade, Serbia, have been trained in how to use COPERT 4, a software tool used world-wide to calculate air pollutant and greenhouse gas emissions from road transport. The workshop was part of the EU-funded Air Quality Governance in the ENPI (European Neighbourhood Policy Instrument) East countries Project (Air-Q-Gov).

All 25 participants learnt how to develop inventories of pollutant emissions from the transport sector in their respective countries. In addition, those participants who came prepared with national data emissions were able to develop model inventories during the actual seminar itself. The COPERT 4 organisers also announced that a Russian interface version of COPERT 4 was made available.

The development of COPERT is coordinated by the European Environment Agency as part of the activities of the European Topic Centre for Air Pollution and Climate Change Mitigation.

The Air-Q-Gov project funded the participation of three representatives from the partner countries and of a key expert for transport:

• Nataliia Ivanenko – key expert
• Anar Mansurov – Azerbaijan
• Alexandr Solovyanov – Russian Federation
• Tatyana Vishnevetskaya – Belarus

All project national coordinators and local experts in the transport sector have been informed that COPERT 4 download and operational assistance is available through the project.

The Air Quality Governance in the ENPI Project, which runs from 2011 to 2014/15, supports Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Moldova, Russia and Ukraine in their efforts to improve their respective institutional and legislative frameworks to converge towards European standards and implement multilateral environmental agreements and conventions. The complementary objective is to enhance cooperation between key stakeholders in the designated region and to increase public awareness about air quality issues. (EU Neighbourhood Info Centre)
