EUBAM helps $180 million cocaine haul at Odessa seaport

02-08-2010

The Ukrainian border services have seized nearly 1,200kg of cocaine at Odessa Seaport as a result of an operation backed by international partners including the European Union Border Assistance Mission to Moldova and Ukraine (EUBAM). A press release from EUBAM said 1,200 bricks, worth around $180 million US dollars, had been found stashed in furnaces on a ship from Venezuela.

Following a request for assistance from the State Customs Service of Ukraine, EUBAM experts identified the consignment as high risk. Based on risk indicators, the Mission recommended a deep examination.

The seizure is the latest in a series of record cocaine hauls at the port and “marks a serious and sustained blow against international organized crime,” the press release said, adding that five suspects had been detained, including Russian and Ukrainian nationals.
An operation spanning three Ukrainian regions, Odessa, Ivano-Frankivsk and Lviv, had been mounted by Ukraine’s State Security Service, State Customs Service with State Border Guard Service and the General Prosecutors office, the press release said. (ENPI Info Centre)
