“EUBAM stands for ‘Experience of Unforgettable Broadening of the Academic Minds of Ukrainian Students,” says Kateryna, 20, a student at the Odessa National Academy of Law after attending a summer school organized by the EU Border Mission, titled ‘Borders of Europe’.
For two weeks in July, Ukrainian students had an opportunity to attend lectures, games, quizzes and trainings on organized crime, cutting corruption, job hunting, leadership, communication, European values and EUBAM activities in the region, according to press release.
Other activities included a visit to the EUBAM field office in Kuchurgan at the Ukrainian-Moldovan border, during which the participants, under the guidance of the border staff, made an excursion along the Kuchurgan Road border crossing point and had a chance to follow the work of a border guard dog.
The students also prepared presentations covering the topics of EU knowledge, anti-corruption and EUBAM activities.
“The future of Ukraine is in the hands of its youth, Udo Burkholder, Head of EUBAM, told the students.
He added that EUBAM was stepping up its work with young people and civil society to make EU values and EU standards stick, and was offering lectures in partner universities in Ukraine and Moldova and reaching out to schools and communities along the entire Moldovan-Ukrainian border.
All participants were awarded with participation certificates and in the future the Mission aims to keep in close contact with the summer school students, make the summer school an annual event and step up its open days for other young people, continues the press release.
As Olga, 19, a law student at the International Humanitarian University in Odessa said: “I guess it was EUBAM’s aim to provide us with this knowledge, but it totally depends on us whether we will have enough brains, courage and ability to put it into practice”.
The EU Border Assistance Mission to Moldova and Ukraine (EUBAM) supports the two countries to harmonize and modernize their border management standards and procedures in accordance with European standards. It also aims to enhance the professional capacities of the Moldovan and Ukrainian customs and border guard services at operational level. In addition, it offers help to develop risk analysis capacities and to improve cross border co-operation between the border guard and customs services and with other law enforcement agencies.
