26-08-2010

This summer Ukrainian managers and leading specialists of forest enterprises had an opportunity to benefit from the experience of their EU counterparts in Latvia, according to a press release of the ENPI-FLEG Programme in Ukraine.

A study tour on issues such as forest use practices, accounting of forest products, counteracting illegal logging, and business was organized by the World Bank from June 27 to July 3, 2010 as part of the Programme’s activities in the country.

In the course of the study tour Ukrainian forestry specialists from Ivano-Frankivsk, Rivne, Volyn, Zhytomyr and Kyiv regions, Center for Continuous Education, Ivano-Frankivsk and Sumy Regional Forestry Departments and representatives from the Science and Information Center for Forest Management followed the work of The State Joint Stock Company «Latvia’s State Forests» (LVM).

Participants also met with senior officials from the central and territorial departments of the Latvian Ministry of Agriculture, Forest Service and LVM company staff. Ukrainians expressed especial interest in the forestry organizational and financial models operating in the Latvian state-owned forests.

The Programme press release said the study tour allowed Ukrainian specialists to compare forestry organization structures in the state-owned forests of Ukraine and Latvia and helped to share a useful experience that would be effectively used in Ukraine.
