Improving road transport and infrastructure in focus at TRACECA meeting

A final document on Road Transport was adopted at the latest TRACECA meeting in the Ukrainian capital Kyiv last month, recommending enhanced cooperation among parties with a view to developing an electronic map of roads and road infrastructure of the South Caucasus and Central Asia, and applying the best experiences of the Georgian Customs in day-to-day work.

The Working Group on Road Transport, including authorised representatives of transport agencies and customs administrations of the Parties to the Multilateral Agreement TRACECA, examined information regarding the implementation of the Action Plan related to the development of international road transport in the Transport Corridor Europe-Caucasus-Asia, adopted in October 2010.

During the meeting, participants discussed proposals from European experts regarding the optimisation of components affecting the competitiveness of the international carriage of goods by road transport, and the TRAX methodology developed by the IDEA project for its application within ITC TRACECA. Representatives of the Georgian customs authorities made a presentation on institutional reforms.

Participants also stressed the need for developing and upgrading the road transport infrastructure, and discussed the possibility of increasing the efficiency of the international transport corridor TRACECA for international road transport.
The Working Group reached a consensus on the need to develop joint actions aimed at improving road safety and the operation of vehicles in compliance with environmental norms, as well as providing training to specialists and organising capacity building activities on transport safety.
