Study on unsustainable forest practices to cover north west Azerbaijan

The ENPI Forest Law Enforcement and Governance (FLEG) programme team in Azerbaijan has started a survey and analysis of the economic and social impact of inefficient and unsustainable forest practices and cross-border forest smuggling in north west Azerbaijan. The study will mainly cover the Qakh-Belokani region.

An initial report providing an overview of the methodology and tools to be used in the study, including preliminary findings, was presented at the kick-off seminar in Qakh last month.

The initial report cited the lack of gas heating infrastructure in the country as a key cause of unsustainable forest practices and described the smuggling of wood products as the least concern.

ENPI FLEG International Forest Consultant Ihor Soloviy gave a presentation on the policy design and governance for sustainable forest management.

The €6 million ENPI Forest Law Enforcement and Governance (FLEG) programme, which is funded by the EU, supports governments, civil society and the private sector in the development of sound and sustainable forest management practices, including the prevention of illegal forestry activities.
