Ways to improve rail and maritime transport in focus in project newsletter
02-02-2012
Ways to promote an efficient transport flow between railways, ports and ferries along the strategic TRACECA (Transport Corridor Europe-Caucasus-Asia) route are examined in the latest newsletter of the EU-funded TRACECA project LOGMOS (Logistics and Motorways of the Sea).
The newsletter focuses on events organised between October 2011 and January 2012 with a view to bridging the interests of TRACECA countries in the context of development of modern logistics and motorways of the sea initiatives.
The events, which brought together various beneficiaries and stakeholders, include the Caspian Ferry Committee Meeting, held on 15-16 December 2011 in Tbilisi. Key executives from different ports and railway companies attended the event to tackle the joint operation of ferry lines.
Among the main issues discussed were the existing technical and administrative bottlenecks to smooth ferry communication, which will be also considered at an upcoming meeting during the second quarter of 2012 in Sofia (Bulgaria). An agreement was also reached, providing for the Councils to participate every six months in LOGMOS meetings for the purpose of monitoring the environment and increasing the competitiveness of railway ferry transportation.
The newsletter also features a Working Group meeting on the implementation of a Pilot Project in the Black Sea region, held on 20 December in Kyiv, which enabled participants from different railway companies in the South Caucasus and members of the LOGMOS team to discuss improved procedures for loading operations with a view to eliminating vessels’ delays at ports.
In addition, the publication makes reference to the second meeting of the LOGMOS Working Group in Ukraine, which was organised on 24 January 2012 in Kiev. Three pilot projects were discussed on that occasion, and participants agreed to re-establish dialogue with the shipping lines, railway administrations and port authorities of the countries involved on the issues of competitiveness of the TRACECA ferry lines.
TRACECA (Transport Corridor Europe-Caucasus-Asia) is an international transport cooperation programme between the EU and its Partner countries in Eastern Europe, South Caucasus and Central Asia. It has a permanent Secretariat in Baku, Azerbaijan. The cooperation framework covers the areas of maritime transport, aviation, road and rail, transport security, and transport infrastructure.
The LOGMOS (Logistics and Motorways of the Sea) project aims to contribute to the long-term sustainable development of the logistics infrastructure and multimodal transport along the TRACECA corridor. It will also enhance the development and implementation of coherent strategies for establishing intermodal integrated transport and logistics chains. (ENPI Info Centre)
