Project rewards journalists for best coverage of forest issues in Azerbaijan

The ENPI FLEG (Forest Law Enforcement and Governance) Programme Office in Baku last month hosted a ceremony to award journalists for their coverage of forest-related issues in the Azerbaijan media.

The EU-funded project awarded prizes to Fiona Maclachlan for her 'Fighting for Forests' article published by the 'Visions of Azerbaijan' magazine and to Gulgiz Suleymanova for a series of articles on FLEG activities published by the leading national newspaper 'Zerkalo'.

During the award ceremony, FLEG presented the activities and initiatives launched and implemented in Azerbaijan.

The 2011 UN International Year of Forests and the Azerbaijani Year of Tourism have both helped generate interest in environmental issues and forests preservation nationwide. Thanks to the ENPI FLEG Programme’s active efforts in promoting public awareness on sustainable forest management and developing forest education, there has been a lot of coverage of these topics in both the national and international media.

The €6 million ENPI Forest Law Enforcement and Governance (FLEG) programme, which is funded by the EU, supports governments, civil society and the private sector in the development of sound and sustainable forest management practices, including the prevention of illegal forestry activities.
