EPP Group Neighbourhood Activities Enlargement and Neighbourhood Policy 2004-2009

2010

The EPP-ED Group has always been a leading force in the EU enlargement process and has tirelessly campaigned for a reunified Europe. Throughout the 2004-2009 parliamentary term, the EPP-ED Group made concerted efforts to strengthen and extend the scope of its initiatives towards Eastern European candidates for EU membership, as well as to all countries covered by the Eastern European Neighbourhood Policy, namely South East European states, as well as Ukraine, Belarus, Moldova, Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan.

As early as 1992, the EPP-ED Group launched a political strategy of support for the enlargement of the EU to include the last 12 accessions, reinforcing its political network all over Eastern Europe. During this period, the EPP-ED Group launched several initiatives to support political transitions, including institutional and economic reforms of candidate countries, and provided political support to new emerging democratic forces.

The strategic aim of the EPP-ED Group and the EPP Party for this region was to provide strong political support to the political forces engaged in the reinforcement of democratic structures in each particular country, in order to speed up democratic development and promote stability and economic prosperity at Europe’s borders.
