One million Schengen visas issued for Ukrainians in 2010

Over one million Schengen visas were issued to Ukrainians in 2010, underlining the positive impact of the Visa Facilitation Agreement, with only about 3 percent of applicants unsuccessful, according to a press release from the EU Delegation in Ukraine.

The figure includes both Schengen and national visas, with more than one third issued free of charge.  “‘The Visa Facilitation Agreement continues to have positive consequences,” said the press release, indicating the tendency of increased number of long-term visas and those issued free of charge.

EU Visa code, which came into force on 5 April 2010, increases transparency, enhances legal security and ensures equal treatment of applicants. In parallel, it harmonises rules and practices for the Schengen States that apply the common visa policy. In particular, the Visa Code ensures improved provision of information, requests to state the motivation of refusal, allows lodging a complaint, and provides the possibility to appeal.

At this stage a significant number of Schengen member states now provide the possibility to apply for a visa in regional centres and thus facilitate the travel arrangements for business and citizens alike.

The Action Plan for setting out the technical conditions to be met by Ukraine in order to progress towards the establishment of a visa free regime was adopted at the 14th EU-Ukraine summit which took place in late November 2010. Its implementation will be systematically monitored by both sides. (ENPI Info Centre)
