EU and Moldova

Moldova has recently stepped up efforts to advance along the path of economic and societal transformation. Moldova’s parliamentary elections on 28 November 2010, recognized by the EU as meeting most international standards, helped the country consolidate political stability. The Government of Prime Minister Vald Filat has since demonstrated resolve in committing itself to economic reform and deep democratisation. The EU reciprocated by boosting support to Moldova’s modernization endeavour. In March 2011, Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighbourhood Policy Štefan Füle said “a lot had been achieved in a short time”, adding “the more Moldova does, the more we can do.”
 
European Commission President José Manuel Barroso underscored in a statement after meeting Moldova’s Prime Minister Filat in Brussels on 10 February 2011: “These efforts are bringing very tangible results. The EU is supporting Moldova in practical ways through our technical and financial assistance, which we will continue to step up in the years to come. This experience has shown that positive, constructive engagement with the European Union generates concrete benefits for the citizens.”
