Yurmala City Hall joins sustainable urban development strategic planning project
24-02-2012
Yurmala City Hall (Latvia) has recently joined the EU-funded CIUDAD Sustainable Urban Development project to share its experience in the development of a European approach to strategic planning and implementation. The announcement was made at the regular meeting of the organisations participating in the project, which took place last month in the city of Ukrainka (Ukraine).
The aim of the Sustainable Urban Development project is to contribute to sustainable local development in depressed small towns in Belarus, Georgia and Ukraine, and to boost their competitiveness with the help of Polish and Ukrainian expertise in strategic planning and local development.
It is run by the Executive Committee of Ukrainka City Council (Ukraine) in partnership with the Association of Small Towns of Ukraine, the Creative Center CCC (Ukraine), the Foundation in Support of Local Democracy - Regional Center in Lublin (Poland), Yurmala City Hall (Latvia), the Executive Committee of Novolukoml City Council (Belarus) and the Student-Youth Council (Georgia).
Four Ukrainian cities are taking part in the project. These are Olyevsk (Zhitomir region), Bobrynets (Kirovograd region), Korsun-Shevchenkovsky (Cherkassy region) and Gorodok (Khmelnytsky region). The Belarusian town of Novolukoml (Vitebsk region) and the Georgian city of Ozurgeti (Guria region) are also taking part in the project.
The CIUDAD programme runs from 2009 to 2012 and co-finances 21 local grant projects in the Neighbourhood's South and East. The projects reflect the overall objective of CIUDAD and in particular the following themes:
• Environmental sustainability and energy efficiency;
• Sustainable economic development and reduction of social disparities;
• Good governance and sustainable urban development planning.
