EU-Russia: green light for ten new Baltic cooperation projects
07-03-2012
Ten new projects are being launched in the Baltic Sea region, strengthening cooperation between the European Union and the Russian Federation. The projects fall under priorities of the Northern Dimension and cover areas of energy efficiency, transport, culture, health and social wellbeing and will be implemented by non-governmental organisations and universities from Russia and the EU.
They all have been selected by the EU Delegation to Russia, following the 2011 call for proposals aimed at local authorities and non-state actors in the Baltic Sea region.
The total budget of the actions is €3.5 million.
One of the approved initiatives is RBGC Russia, which is a sister project to the Rail Baltica Growth Corridor project financed by the Baltic Sea Region Programme 2007-2013. RBGC Russia extends activities of the mother project towards the North-West Russia in order to gain full geographical partnership for the joint development work in the fields of passenger and freight traffic. The project brings the Russia-EU cooperation into an operational level within national, regional and local authorities, transport and logistics stakeholders as well as academia in the Eastern Baltic Sea region.
The Baltic Sea region plays a strategic role in EU-Russia relations being the main gateway from Russia to Europe. In 2010, based on an amendment by the European Parliament, the European Commission adopted a €20 million action plan to finance activities in support of the external dimension of the EU Baltic Sea Strategy. Most of the activities and projects take place in the framework of the Northern Dimension policy. This policy was initiated in 1999 with participation of Norway, Iceland, EU Member States and the Russian Federation. It provides a common framework for dialogue and concrete cooperation, promotes economic integration, competitiveness and sustainable development in Northern Europe. (ENPI Info Centre)
