EU Delegation deplores violation of gay and lesbian rights in Moldova
15-03-2012
The EU Delegation in Moldova has voiced deep regret over decisions to “prohibit the propaganda of non-traditional sexual orientations”, which were adopted recently by several Moldovan municipalities (the cities of Bălți and Anenii Noi, and the villages of Chetriş and Hiliuţi in the Făleşti District).
In a statement issued in agreement with the EU Heads of Mission in Moldova, the EU Delegation expressed concern over the “manifestations of intolerance and discrimination affecting minorities, and in particular lesbians, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) persons, and more generally with any attempts to restrict the universal rights of human beings on a discriminatory basis.”
The statement rejected and condemned such “unacceptable violations of human rights,” emphasising that“sexual orientation and gender identity cannot in any way justify or serve as a pretext for restrictions on freedom of expression, assembly and association or other fundamental freedoms.”
The statement described the decisions as “violations of human rights and discrimination against LGBT persons, by restricting freedom of expression and freedom of association and assembly,” adding they did not respect Moldova’s international human rights commitments, such as its membership in the Council of Europe and the ratification of the United Nations’ Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.
The statement urged the Moldovan authorities at all levels “to demonstrate and ensure respect for the principle of non-discrimination on the basis of which human rights apply equally to every human being.” (ENPI Info Centre)
