Moldova-Ukraine: Dutch experts pass on surveillance knowledge to ports officers
16-03-2012
The EU Border Assistance Mission to Moldova and Ukraine (EUBAM) has invited two experienced Dutch trainers to share their knowledge on container searching techniques and identification of manipulated seals with EUBAM's partners in Moldova and Ukraine. The training was a follow-up to a study visit carried out in the Netherlands last September.
According to a EUBAM press release, the theoretical aspects of the training were conducted at EUBAM headquarters, and its practical aspects at the Euro terminal in Odessa port, from 20-24 February. Twelve Ukrainian and four Moldovan customs officers working at Odessa, Illichevsk and Giurgiulesti (Moldova) ports took part in the training.
Ultimately, the training will contribute to enhancing port surveillance in Moldova and Ukraine and minimise the risks of maritime containers being used for illicit drug trafficking, transnational organised crime and other forms of fraudulent activity. The training specifically targeted the surveillance of sea containers, focusing on risk assessment and targeting techniques, identification of manipulated seals, and information on smuggling modi operandi.
EUBAM contributes to the delivery of good quality border and customs services to the citizens and companies of Moldova, Ukraine and the European Union. Together with border guard and customs services of the two countries, the Mission facilitates people-to-people contacts, legitimate trade and security. (ENPI Info Centre)
