South Caucasus Youth Parliament declares: 'Democracy starts with You!'

"Democracy has to be experienced. It cannot be learned from books only."This is the guiding principle of an EU-funded project 'Democracy starts with You!', aiming to increase the political participation of young people from minority and rural areas in the South Caucasus.
 
According to a press release from the EU Delegation to Georgia, this "unique idea" of bringing together Armenian and Georgian pupils will see the opening on Tuesday, 27 March, of the South Caucasus Youth Parliament.
 
Participants are young people from minority and rural areas of Armenia and Georgia, who will gather together to vote on a Joint Declaration, which they will be presenting later to the European Parliament in Brussels.
 
The opening of the South Caucasus Youth Parliament takes place in the presence of Georgian Education Minister Dimitri Shashkin, representatives of the Education Ministry of Armenia and the Delegation of the European Union to Georgia.
 
"This project enables young generation of the South Caucasus to experience democracy and learn by doing rather than reading," says Dr. Canan Atilgan, Project Director.  
 
Democracy Starts With You also updates teachers in the South Caucasus region on modern teaching methods and contents on the subject of Civic Education as well as providing pupils with an experience of how democracy works in practice. (ENPI Info Centre)
