A new breath of culture: project visits Odessa museums to examine applications

A number of pre-monitoring visits to museums and organisations that have submitted applications to take part in the ‘New Breath of Culture: Fill Heritage with Life of Arts’ project took place last month. The project is funded by the European Union as part of the Eastern Partnership Culture Programme.

The goals of the project are to develop effective systems for identifying and sharing good practices of using art for the promotion of culture and historic heritage in the southern Ukraine, Georgia and Armenia and to develop cross-border and cross-cultural partnerships on the basis of a common platform for the facilitation, generation and realisation of culture activities for socio-economic development.

On 6 April, the project visited museums in Odessa that have submitted applications. The first meeting took place in the Odessa Museum of Local Lore located in the city centre. The building is a monument to architecture from the second half of the XIXth century. Especially valuable objects of the museum include a part of a foremast of the legendary battleship ‘Potyomkin’ and a fragment of the original monument to Catherine the Great and her associates.

On 5-6 April, the project visited the museums of Izmail that have submitted applications. Izmail is the city of regional submission in the Odessa oblast, Ukraine, an administrative centre of the Izmail area. It is located in the southwest of the oblast on the Danube River, which has a population of 76,366. Izmail is associated with the main Turkish fortress on Danube which was stormed by commander A.V.Suvorov.

The first meeting took place in the local history museum of Pridunavye. It is located in the mansion which earlier belonged to the Mayor of Izmail (1880-1892 and 1900-1906). The funds of the museum include 31,800 exhibits reflecting the different periods of history of Izmail and all the multinational regions (Russian, Bessarabia Bulgarians, Greeks, etc.).
