EUMM in Georgia welcomes the release of detainees by de facto South Ossetian authorities

The EU Monitoring Mission in Georgia (EUMM) has welcomed the release of four people by the de facto South Ossetian authorities in recent days. The release took place one day after the parties came to an agreement at the Incident Prevention and Response Mechanism meeting in Ergneti last week.

According to an EUMM press release, the detained persons had mostly been collecting wild greens, and may have accidentally crossed the Administrative Boundary Line.

The EUMM expressed appreciation to all the sides for their constructive approach.

“The Incident Prevention and Response Mechanism meetings and the attached hotline are not only essential tools for confidence building but play an important role in facilitating livelihood issues for the population along the Administrative Boundary Line,” said the EUMM in its press release.

The EUMM began its operations on 1 October 2008 as a result of the six-point agreement and its implementing measures signed between President Medvedev and President Sarkozy in the aftermath of the 2008 conflict between Russia and Georgia. The mission is mandated to monitor the compliance of all parties with the six-point agreement and to ensure there is no return to hostilities, that people can return in peace to their homes and that normal life can resume.
