Forestry journalism competition improves transparency in Ukraine
05-07-2012

The final of the ‘Every year – year of forests’ competition organised by NGO Telekritika, which is dedicated to issues related to independence and freedom of the press, and the ENPI-FLEG Programme in Ukraine, took place recently at the World Bank office in Kyiv.
According to a press release from ENPI FLEG (European Neighbourhood Policy Instrument Forest Law Enforcement and Governance), “overall, the competition has made the Ukrainian forest sector more transparent, public and open”.
The competition finalists’ articles and programmes were posted on Telekritika’s website. A complete list of items accepted for the competition can be found on the ENPI FLEG Programme national website: www.fleg.org.ua. The authors of all the items selected for the final received acknowledgements. The authors of the four best items were awarded with honorary diplomas and prizes.
According to Oleg Lystopad, a journalist, an ENPI FLEG Programme expert and a member of the jury, the aim of the competition – to improve forestry journalism – has been achieved. The articles and programmes of the contestants have added up to the material that the forest sector lacks - analytical material and forecasting material – work that would indicate possible solutions for problems and could be used as the basis for further work by foresters, environmentalists and law makers.
The €6 million European Neighbourhood Policy Instrument (ENPI) Forest Law Enforcement and Governance (FLEG) Programme supports governments, civil society and the private sector in the development of sound and sustainable forest management practices, including the prevention of illegal forestry activities.
