EU and Moldova stress commitment to reform and integration

The EU and Moldova yesterday held the first meeting of the Association Council under the new Association Agreement, reconfirming their willingness to implement commitments on Moldova’s political association and economic integration with the EU.
Both sides reconfirmed their aim to build a democratic, stable and prosperous Moldova, stressing the importance of giving a new impetus to political and economic reforms. The EU underlined the need to step up efforts on preventing and fighting corruption and reforming the justice sector, and to urgently address weaknesses in the financial sector.
The Association Council welcomed the successful implementation of the visa free regime, adding that 360,000 Moldovan citizens travelled to the Schengen area visa free between April and December 2014.
It also noted the substantial increase in EU assistance provided to Moldova, with up to €410 million available for the period 2014-2017. (EU Neighbourhood Info)
