New cross-border projects launched with Ukrainian partners

16-07-2010

Three new cross-border projects funded by the EU under the Hungary-Slovakia-Romania-Ukraine ENPI Cross-Border Cooperation (CBC) programme will tackle infant mortality, create a cross-border industrial park and contribute to the development of biomass energy.

The contracts were due to be signed during a major promotional event organised by the programme from 13-16 July, with a rafting tour down the Tisa River, covering all four participating countries.

A press release said the first project would help improve business infrastructure and thus enhance the development and cross border cooperation of Ukrainian and Hungarian SMEs by creating an integrated cross-border industrial park. The second project will contribute to biomass energy development in Ukrainian-Slovak border regions, while the third will aim at decreasing the level of infant mortality on the cross-border territory of Hungary and Ukraine.

The purpose of the promotional river tour is to draw attention to the CBC programme as well as to visit the locations where the new projects awardedwill be implemented. During the trip, a team from the Joint Technical Secretariat aims to raise awareness of the programme’s potential with local populations, municipalities, authorities and the press, presenting the successful projects, distributing info-materials and conducting press briefings in all four countries.

The Hungary-Slovakia-Romania-Ukraine ENPI CBC Programme is implemented over the period 2007-2013 on the external border of the participating EU Member States with Ukraine. The programme allocates €68,638,283 of ENPI funding for the seven years, offering a wide range of opportunities to potential beneficiaries through four priorities: Economic and social development; Enhancement of environmental qualities; Increase in border efficiency; and Support for people to people cooperation.

The second call for project proposals is open until 26 October 2010. (ENPI Info Centre)
