Ashton: return of freight rail traffic via Transnistria excellent news for business and people

The EU has welcomed the resumption last week of freight rail traffic through the Transnistrian region of the Republic of Moldova in what EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine described as “a crucial step forward for restoring confidence between the sides to the Transnistrian issue.”

In a statement issued by her spokesperson on 30 April, Ashton said it was also “excellent news for the business community and the people living on the two banks of the Nistru / Dniestr,” adding: “We are pleased that technical expertise from the EU helped come up with a practical solution.”
The EU is looking forward to more good news for confidence-building, such as the resumption of telecommunications across the Nistru/Dniestr river, the High Representative said.
