Commission approves €5 million for new phase of EuroMed Youth programme
23-07-2009
The European Commission has approved a contribution of €5 million for the fourth phase of the EuroMed Youth programme, under its 2009 action programme for the Mediterranean region.
EuroMed Youth IV will build on the achievements of phase III, which saw management of the programme transferred to national authorities, creating a greater sense of ownership in the partner countries. The new phase will continue this process in order to optimise the impact of the programme, taking into account priorities in national youth strategies.
According to the programme action fiche, its general objective is to support and reinforce the contribution of youth organisations and young people in general to the development of society and democracy in the Euro-Mediterranean region. Specifically, it aims to stimulate mutual understanding and fight against stereotypes and prejudice; to promote active citizenship among young people; and to contribute to the development of youth policies in the partner countries.
The budget for the programme is €5 million. A significant part of the programme will be directly managed by the beneficiary countries, tentatively from the end of 2009. The duration of the programme is 36 months.
