Euro-Med Ministers meet to discuss greater gender equality

Euro-Mediterranean Ministers meet in the Moroccan city of Marrakech on 11-12 November to discuss how the countries can jointly promote gender equality and strengthen women’s role in society.

A press release from the Swedish EU Presidency said the purpose of the meeting was to follow up and agree on continued measures to achieve the objectives of the document adopted at the Euromed meeting in Istanbul in 2006. The document, “Strengthening the Role of Women in Society”, contains objectives and concrete undertakings aimed at strengthening the role of women in society and to combat discrimination in the region.
 
The EU funds a regional gender-equality project in the Mediterranean partner countries, ‘Enhancing Equality between Men and Women in the Euromed region’. The three-year €4.5 million programme has three main objectives: the full implementation of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW), the strengthening of strategies on fighting gender-based violence against women, and support to the follow-up of the 2006 Istanbul Ministerial Conference.
