Mediterranean Partner Countries Facing the Crisis 2008/9
01-08-2009

The Mediterranean partner countries “appear to be fairly resilient” in the face of the global financial and economic crisis, “at least more so than what can be seen with industrialised and emerging countries”, according to a report by the EU-funded FEMISE project.
“Nevertheless, this does not change the fact they will probably be hit, and significantly so, at a later date,” warns the report, titled ‘Mediterranean Partner Countries Facing the Crisis 2008/9’.
In the first part, the 210-page report examines the crisis from a general perspective, following three chapters:
- The first aims to determine how the international crisis is going to affect the Mediterranean countries by focusing on the unprecedented aspects of the processes.
- The second details the system of interdependence linking the Mediterranean countries with the rest of the world, especially Europe via trade of goods and services, direct investment and transfers.
- The third gives an overview of the current social policies set up in the Mediterranean countries, which will play a decisive role in a context where the population is already struggling with unemployment and under-employment.
In the second part, the report addresses the current situation of the south Mediterranean economies concerned, country by country.
