SafeMed to look at implementation of convention on anti-fouling systems on ships
01-06-2011
The EU-funded maritime security project Safemed II is organising a regional Workshop on surveys and inspections related to the International Convention on the Control of Harmful Anti-Fouling Systems on Ships, 2001 (AFS Convention), in Larnaca, Cyprus, on 7 and 8 June 2011.
A press release said the workshop would be taking stock of the level of implementation of the AFS Convention, with special emphasis on the survey and inspection procedures that are essential for its effective implementation.
The event will also serve as a platform for exchanging views about best practices with regard to surveys and inspections, while also providing an opportunity for participants to exchange views with other Port State Control Officers from the European Union / Paris Memorandum of Understanding on PSC member states and surveyors from Classification Societies/Recognized Organizations who have extensive experience in the surveying and inspection requirements of the AFS Convention.
The €5.5 million SafeMed II project seeks to mitigate the existing imbalance between the participating partners that are EU Mediterranean member states and the non EU members from the region in the application of maritime legislation. Among its activities, it funds scholarships to internationally recognized maritime universities. (ENPI Info Centre).
