Delegation newsletter focuses on EU support to democratic transition in Tunisia

The EU Delegation in Tunisia has issued the latest edition of its newsletter Europa which highlights the EU’s extensive support to the transition process in the country in various areas ranging from democracy and good governance to technical assistance and support to civil society.

The twelve-page publication, available in French and Arabic, underscores the historical changes Tunisia has witnessed in 2011, and the EU’s response to the Arab Spring. Under the newly launched SPRING programme, the EU is providing 350 million for the period 2011-2012 to face the socio-economic challenges and support the transition to democracy.

The newsletter makes a reference to various projects which were launched by the EU since January 2011 to strengthen economic and social reforms, as well as civil society and the rule of law. The amount of financial assistance granted by the EU increased from 80 million to €200 million in 2011, including 40 €million for humanitarian actions.

The publication also features articles relating to the economic support provided by the EU. Under the Recovery Support Programme, the EU has provided €100 million to implement financial and technical assistance measures. The EU has also allocated €20 million to promote economic development in the country’s most disadvantaged areas by improving the working conditions of the population.

In addition, the newsletter showcases the EU’s support to the rule of law in Tunisia, including the launch of the new programme ‘Justice’ for an amount of €25 million. In this context, the EU organised a fact-finding mission in June 2011 with the aim of providing to its Tunisian partners the tools which will help them modernise the judicial and penitentiary systems, and define the priorities and actions of the new European programme.

In the realm of economy and trade, the EU and Tunisia held negotiations regarding the trade liberalisation of agricultural products. They also agreed to launch negotiations this year with a view to reaching an agreement on the evaluation of industrial products. In 2011, the European Investment Bank (EIB) provided around €400 million to support the modernisation of the road infrastructure among others. The EIB also suggested to Tunisian authorities the organisation of a conference for Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (SMEs) in spring this year within the framework of the Facility for Euro-Mediterranean Investment and Partnership (FEMIP).(ENPI Info Centre)
