Design inspiration: EU project showcasing innovative jewellery creations
07-05-2012

An exhibition opens in Cairo tomorrow featuring innovative works of jewellery produced as part of an EU-funded project. The exhibition is the first of a series of exhibitions between Cairo and Aswan to showcase the designs of 45 Egyptian students who took part in the 'Nubre' initiative run by Azza Fahmy Jewellery.
The most significant outcome of this project is that the students are provided with the opportunity to showcase their talents by exhibiting their work to the public. The Azza Fahmy Foundation will also offer the best students the opportunity to gain recognition for their designs, to work on Azza Fahmy future projects, in addition to multiple financial prizes.
Nubre, which means design in the Nubian language, supports students with a passion for design. It was launched initially with the core purpose of enhancing /building a "design culture" in Egypt and creating a bridge between local and European students.
Prior to the exhibition, four workshops were held in Aswan under the theme "Linking Heritage to Contemporary Design" where designers from some of the best jewellery design schools in Europe participated in workshops. Its main focus was "finding inspiration, recognising it, understanding it and then knowing what to do with it". During the workshops, the students developed their own design concepts using materials from the environment. The final stage saw Aziza Foamy and her team work with the students to transform the concepts into actual pieces of Jewellery.
The first stop of the exhibition tour will be the British Council in Agouza – Cairo from 9 til 12 May 2012. The exhibition will then visit other locations in Cairo and Aswan.
This project is one of the projects funded by the Delegation of the European Union to Egypt in the framework of the annual EU Calls for Proposals for Cultural Activities. (EU Neighbourhood Info)
