EU concern at condition of Palestinian hunger strikers in Israeli detention
11-05-2012
In a statement issued this week, the EU missions in Jerusalem and Ramallah have expressed their concern at the deteriorating health condition of the Palestinians held in administrative detention in Israel who have been on hunger strike for more than two months, calling on the Israeli government to make available all necessary medical assistance, to allow family visits as a matter of urgency, and to fully respect the international human rights obligations towards all prisoners.
"The EU reiterates its longstanding position on the use by Israel of administrative detention without charge. Detainees have the right to be informed of the reasons for their detention and be subject to a fair trial without undue delay," the statement said.
The statement said the EU was closely following the on-going hunger strike by several hundreds of Palestinian prisoners. (EU Neighbourhood Info)
