Audiovisual support to Mediterranean partners: new approach and activities presented in Cannes

On the sidelines of the Cannes Festival, at the 'Pavillon du Cinéma du Monde', the EU-funded Euromed Audiovisual III programme has presented the results of its activities and its innovative approach to some 60 Euro-Mediterranean professionals.

Berthold Wohlleber, the programme’s interim team leader, presented an introductory graphic to clarify the programme's capacity development approach, built around three pillars – People, Organizations, Institutions and Legislation – liaising the proposed integrated activities with principles of capacity development. This was the result of various roundtable workshops held during the last few months, which led to the following conclusions:
  • Creation of a regional market for potential investors - Regional hub.
  • Facilitation of the admission of Arab films on regional markets.
  • Support the establishment of South-South regional funds.
  • Fostering vocational capacities in the audiovisual sector.
  • Relocate the film culture in educational systems.
Ultimately, the process should lead the partner countries of the Southern Mediterranean to a modern audiovisual production aimed at strengthening a regional South-South identity that reflects diversity.

These roundtables were held (in chronological order) in the following countries:
Algeria, on October 17, 2011
Jordan, on October 20, 2011
Lebanon, on January 20, 2012
Tunisia, on January 24, 2012
Palestine, on February 3, 2012
Morocco, on April 11, 2012

Preliminary contacts were established with Egypt and Israel to hold roundtable consultations in the near future.

Through this approach, Euromed Audiovisual III seeks to support the young cinema that has emerged in the past two years through the political changes in the Arab world, confirming the emergence of a modern regional identity based on the diversities that characterise each country.

A study on the “Identification of Financing Tools for Film and Audiovisual Production and their Practical Use in the South Mediterranean Region” was presented at the seminar describing over 20 types of financing for the audiovisual sector.

The Euromed Audiovisual III programme aims to contribute to the development and strengthening of the capacity of the film sector in the ENPI South region (Algeria, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Occupied Palestinian Territory, Syria, Tunisia) and to contribute significantly to mutual understanding, intercultural dialogue and cultural diversity, in line with the "Strategy for the Development of Euro-Mediterranean Audiovisual Cooperation", approved by Euromed culture ministers in Athens in May 2008.
