Horizon 2020 workshop: Mastering Geographic Information Systems for urban waste water management

The Horizon 2020 Capacity Building/Mediterranean Environment Programme recently organised a workshop to introduce Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and remote sensing techniques, with particular emphasis on wastewater management and operation, to water managers and decision-makers from water authorities, ministries, industries, NGOs and other competent bodies as well as university staff of Mediterranean partner countries.
 
The course, attended by 22 participants, presented the fundamental principles of the GIS and remote sensing technologies, the principles underlying the GIS/model-based management of wastewater systems and the necessary background into the GIS-based analytical and problem-solving techniques for sustainable planning and management of wastewater systems. The role of the technology in supporting the decision making process was also highlighted.
 
Following an initial introductory lecture, the course unfolded through exercises and software demonstration, as the underlying principle of the course was “learning by doing”. Participants acquired hands-on experience in data structures, map projections and coordinate systems, processing of digital geographic information, creation of digital elevation models, visualisation, mapping of water and environmental features, streams and aquifer delineation, digitisation, soil and land use mapping, terrain analysis for hydrological and hydraulic modelling, presentation of modelling results, etc.
 
The Horizon 2020 Capacity Building/Mediterranean Environment Programme (H2020 CB/MEP) aims to support the implementation of the Horizon 2020 Initiative Road Map and Work Plan through capacity building and awareness raising activities, and to promote integration/mainstreaming of environment issues into other sector policies.
 
The Horizon 2020 initiative aims to improve the quality of life of more than 420 million citizens living in the 25 countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea. It is an umbrella programme drawing together all the policies, strategies and action plans for enhancing environmental protection. (EU Neighbourhood Info Centre)
