European Parliament calls for launch of second phase of Invest in Med
14-06-2012
The European Parliament (EP) has called for the initiation of a second phase of the EU-funded progremme Invest in Med, which acted as a catalyst of entrepreneurial networks and of channel synergies between the two sides of the Mediterranean, in a resolution adopted last month on the EU commercial and investments strategy in the Southern Mediterranean, following the wave of Arab revolutions.
The European Parliament’s motion indicates in particular, that it is important to encourage entrepreneurship by adopting specific measures to create a conducive environment and to include the society, and "wishes that the Invest in Med programme, whose mission is to foster the cooperation between SMEs and organisations that represent them into the Member States of the Union and South Mediterranean countries, enters its second stage", according to a press release published by the ANIMA Investment Network.
The Parliament also expects the new European strategy for trade, innovation and investment to constitute a fundamental instrument to fight corruption, iniquity and repression.
Invest in Med, a Euro-Mediterranean Network of organizations, was funded by the EU with a budget of €9 million, committing to investment promotion and trade facilitation, strengthening SME collaboration and exchange of best-practices. It aimed to increase the abilities and efficiency of Mediterranean Investment Promotion Agencies (IPAs), thus enabling more foreign direct investment in the Mediterranean Partner Countries. Supporting the economic development of the Mediterranean, this multi-country platform worked to reinforce cooperation between European and Mediterranean IPAs. (EU Neighbourhood Info)
