From human rights to environment: six new youth projects to be implemented in Jordan

Six youth projects have been contracted with five Jordanian NGOs as part of the EU-funded Euromed Youth IV programme. These projects aim to create dialogue within the EuroMed region, to facilitate cultural exchange, to promote tolerance and understanding, and to increase the number of youth projects in the EuroMed region using non-formal education methodologies.

Ahmad Ajarmeh of the Ministry of Political Development said the approved projects fell under the programme's first action (youth exchanges) and third action (training courses and study visit). He added that such types of youth projects are based on having partners from both sides of the Mediterranean with partnerships that can reach eights partners from the Middle East and Europe.

The projects approved will be implemented before December 2012 and include:
  • A training course about “enhancing the role of CSOs in defending youth rights and liberties” to be implemented by Al-Hayat Centre for Civil Society Development will be implementing.
  • A training course about effective citizenship titled 'I am citizen too' to be implemented by Tatawor Association.
  • A training course about the environment by the Masar Centre for Studies and Research.
  • A study visit about women's empowerment in Jordan to be organised by Leaders of Tomorrow.
  • A training course under the theme of inter-religious dialogue in Madaba titled 'religion as a cross-cutting issue in youth work within the EuroMed context' to be organised by the Institute for Leadership Excellence (ILE)
All of these youth projects are meeting the national and regional goals and needs of the ministry in terms of raising awareness about human rights, protecting the environment, gender equality, facing xenophobia, and enhancing the effective participation of youth.

The ministry still has two calls open for interested NGOs to submit their proposals for carrying out similar youth projects by 1 November 2012 and 1 February 2013.

EuroMed Youth IV is funded by the EU during the period 2010-2013 with a budget of €5 million under the European Neighbourhood Policy. The programme aims at stimulating and encouraging mutual comprehension among young people in the Euro-Mediterranean region, fighting stereotypes and prejudices and enhancing the sense of solidarity among youth by promoting active citizenship. It also seeks to contribute to the development of youth policies in the Mediterranean Partner Countries.
