Mediterranean civil society calls for global sustainable development action
18-06-2012
Environmental activists, journalists and scientists agreed on the importance of raising awareness about sustainable development within civil society in a workshop hosted by the Secretariat of the Union for the Mediterranean and entitled ‘A Generation of We Can: Media as partner for sustainable development’.
The workshop was organised on World Environment Day on 5 June, ahead of the United Nations Conference for Sustainable Development, known as Rio+20. It consisted of a series of activities on communication and capacity building for sustainable development. Its purpose was to interact with the preparatory process of RIO+20. The conference brought together sustainable development activists and relevant media from the Mediterranean region.
Participants recognised the difficulty for both civil society and decision-makers to define and understand the concept of a ‘green economy’ and agreed on the need to improve education, dialogue and the exchange of information in society while avoiding empty talk and general concepts on the global communication scene. The important role of the media and social networks was highlighted as a powerful vehicle for action and exchange among activists, scientists and communicators. It was acknowledged that online platforms like Twitter and Facebook can leverage the visibility of important initiatives on sustainable development, from a global to a local scale.
