Battling common health threats in the Mediterranean: EpiSouth Plus reviews project results and plans forward

An EU-funded project aimed at enhancing preparedness against common health threats across the Mediterranean has met to discuss its results over the last 18 months, as well as to plan future activities. The second Steering Committee Meeting of the EpiSouth Plus project was held in Brussels on 29-30 May.

According to a project press release, members of the Steering Committee met with members of the project’s advisory board to present the results achieved until now, receive advice on present challenges and opportunities, and discuss the collaboration framework with the European Commission, International Organizations and Networks.

The EpiSouth Network includes 27 countries (9 EU and 17 non-EU, plus one EU candidate country) and is the biggest inter-country collaborative effort of this kind in the region. Since October 2010, with the approval of a new project phase, the network has been focussing on increasing health security in the Mediterranean Area and South-East Europe by enhancing and strengthening preparedness to common health threats and bio-security risks at national and regional levels in the countries of the EpiSouth Network.

EpiSouth Plus is co-ordinated by the Italian National Institute of Health (ISS) and co-funded by the EU Public Health Programme (DG SANCO) and EuropeAid with an amount of €3.9 million together with the involved Public Health Institutes and Ministries of Health. (ENPI Info Centre)
