Egypt: Ashton hails major milestone in message to congratulate new President

EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton yesterday congratulated Egypt's new President Mohammed Morsi, describing his election as a major milestone in the country's democratic transition.
 
A statement issued on Sunday by the spokesperson of the High Representative for Foreign Affairs said:
 
"High Representative Catherine Ashton welcomes the peaceful conduct of Presidential elections and congratulates Mohammed Morsi on his election as the President of Egypt. This is a major milestone in Egypt's democratic transition and an historic moment for the country and the region."
 
The statement said Ashton looked forward to engaging with President Morsi and his executive, "which she trusts will be inclusive and representative of Egypt's diversity. In this regard, the High Representative encourages the President-elect to reach out to all other political and social groups". (EU Neighbourhood Info)
