Training course on sustainable treatment techniques and solid waste recycling held in Tunisia

A training course was held in Sfax, Tunisia, in the middle of June as part of the EU-funded CIUDAD project ‘Promotion of a sustainable and integrated urban solid waste management system in the Maghreb countries’ (GEDUM).

The target groups for the training session included municipal officials dealing with waste management and the staff of private companies managing solid waste collection. The session tackled the following topics:
Strategies for sustainable waste management in Tunisia
The aerobic treatment or composting of household waste
       Recycling household garbage: case studies
Recycling household garbage (plastic, paper, metals and organic waste sectors)

GEDUM aims to improve the management of solid waste in several South Mediterranean municipalities (Beni Mellal in Morocco, Sétif in Algeria, Sfax in Tunisia, and Reus in Spain). It seeks to develop and/or establish an integrated and sustainable waste management system in each municipality, piloting innovative sorting and waste recovery systems, and involving and integrating the informal sector.

CIUDAD runs from 2009 to 2012 and co-finances 21 local grant projects in the Neighbourhood's South and East. The projects reflect the overall objective of CIUDAD and in particular the following themes:
• Environmental Sustainability and Energy Efficiency
• Sustainable Economic development and reduction of social disparities and
• Good governance and sustainable urban development planning.  (EU Neighbourhood Info)
