War Free World Heritage newsletter highlights project’s activities

The EU-funded War Free World Heritage Listed Cities project, implemented under the CIUDAD programme, has published the second edition of its newsletter highlighting the project’s activities in the protection of cultural heritage in times of conflict.

“This project goes well with our strategic goals,” said Minister of Culture of Georgia Nicholas Rurua in an interview published in the newsletter.  He affirmed that preserving and presenting Georgian heritage resources is the government’s priority, pointing out that the project “War Free World Heritage Listed Cities” is important for his country in many terms and that the experience of Mtskheta will be used for other cities and sites in Georgia.

The newsletter features a lengthy interview with the Director General of ICCROM (International Centre for the Study of the preservation and restoration of cultural property) Mounir Bouchenaki, who explains how the project fits within the ICCROM agenda and policies for cultural heritage conservation in times of crisis.

The publication also contains information about two Concept studies carried out by the project in Mtskheta (Georgia) and in Byblos (Lebanon), as well as preparatory works for the design of the Integrated Management Plan for the Historical Monuments of Mtskheta to be carried out with the support of the UNESCO.

War Free World Heritage Listed Cities is part of the EU-funded CIUDAD programme, which runs from 2009 to 2012 and co-finances 21 local grant projects in the Neighbourhood's South and East. The projects reflect the overall objective of CIUDAD and in particular the following themes:

• Environmental Sustainability and Energy Efficiency
• Sustainable Economic development and reduction of social disparities and
• Good governance and sustainable urban development planning.
